The Bulletin - Edition 15

We have had a focus this week for pupils in both the Pre-Prep & Prep on ensuring they understand how to travel safely to and from school, and how important it is to bear in mind all the messages we have conveyed to them here regarding road safety overall. Mrs Murphy covers this in more detail below. I would be grateful please if all Prep parents could discuss with your boys this weekend their own understanding of how to stay safe when making journeys by foot, on their scooters or on their bikes. If other family members or carers are supervising your children on their journeys to and from school, as with our regular parking and traffic reminders, please ensure they also understand our expectations around safe travel for your children. Finally, please reinforce how important it always is to cross roads safely too.

Mrs Grove’s ‘Awe & Wonder’ House Photo Competition in the Prep:

Trudging through the current winter months could result in anything other than a developing sense of awe and wonder about the world around us, especially as the excitement of the holiday season now seems like more than just a few short weeks behind us! What better way to cheer ourselves up therefore, and express our assembly theme of ‘Awe and Wonder’ at the same time than to hold a photography competition?

Mrs Sunderland’s Year 4 History Trip to Hampton Court Palace:

How fortunate we are that, when studying the Tudor period, we have a pre-eminent Tudor palace on our doorstep! On their visit to Hampton Court Palace this week, Year 4 learnt about the court of Henry VIII, and how they lived, and in particular, what they ate.

News from Mr Salt, Head of Games:

The rugby season kicked off this week with competitive interschool rugby fixtures for the first time since 2019. It was a very exciting afternoon! The U11 A and B team travelled to Ealing to face St Benedict’s and the U10 ABC teams hosted them at Hampton Prep. Past matches against St Benedict’s have always been competitive fixtures. With the advantage of playing from September, they are always well drilled. However, it is a credit to how the Hampton Prep boys have trained that they came away with some great results.

A word from Mrs Murphy

As Mr Smith notes, we have been reiterating important road safety messages here in Pre-Prep this week, Mrs Hand with the younger children in Kindergarten and, for the older children, during assemblies. The children have been told how vitally important it is that they stay close to the adult accompanying them to or from school each day. Furthermore, it has been stressed that they must never cross roads without the permission and presence of the adult taking care of them. We have also revisited the fact that we should always walk along pavements, discussing the fact that one could very easily trip and fall in to the road. I would urge you to spend time this weekend going over these points at home and, if your child is inclined to run off ahead of you, please do insist they stay close by your side or better still take hold their hand, as it really does only take seconds for accidents to happen.

Kindergarten

It has been a ‘spacetastic’ week in Kindergarten exploring space. We looked closely at the moon and the stars, discovering there is only one sun that our planet Earth orbits. We were amazed to find out that there are eight planets in space and planet Earth has one moon, which we have been looking out for on our way to school, and this moon can be seen from countries all over the world. We know the people who go into space are called astronauts and that moon rovers have special cameras that take photographs of the moon to send back to the scientists on Earth.

Reception

Brrrrrrr, it has been a chilly week here in Reception. We have taken a trip to Antarctica to meet some penguin friends! We have been reading lots of penguin stories this week, using them to inspire our independent writing. We wrote about what could happen if a penguin came to stay - some children thought they would have fun with their penguin at the swimming pool, some decided to feed him Sea Bass, and one little boy decided that he would take him straight back to Antarctica!

Year 1

Once upon a time in Year 1… We have been learning about traditional tales in English this week! First of all, the children listened to the story ‘Dragon Dinosaur’ and then having chosen their favourite part, discussed it with a friend and then wrote about it. The children were then challenged to bring this traditional tale to Hampton Pre-Prep by writing a description of the deadliest, fiercest animal they could think of to defend our school from a T-Rex dinosaur! We also spoke about the different tales we have come across and some of our favourite characters from these. We shall be enjoying a variety of fairy tales in the classroom over the coming weeks. And they all lived happily ever after…!

Year 2

Year 2 have taken inspiration from Alan Turing this week and have designed their very own machine. They thought carefully about what their machine would do, how it would work and what it would look like. Putting these ideas together, the children created a super piece of writing all about their machine!
