It has been a chilly week in class as we explored the season Winter. We read the story, ‘Jack Frost’ by Kazuno Kohara. As a group we carried out a fun and informative science investigation where we discussed how ice begins. Many of the children were able to tell us that water has to freeze in order to become ice. Therefore, we did exactly this and filled some plastic pots and latex gloves with sequins and water, then placed them in the freezer overnight to see what would happen. We also filled a latex glove with water and put it outside in our garden to see if it was as cold outside as it was in our freezer! The next morning, we observed and discussed the changes that had occurred and used the ice in our play whilst observing the changes. This topic gave us the opportunity to discover new words and their meanings, for example, words such as liquid, melt, solid, migrate and hibernation.
We watched a video clip of an igloo being made, and were very impressed at the skill in doing so, as well as the amount of time that goes into building these. Sheets of ice were used to make windows and a skylight. As the snow did not settle this week sadly we couldn’t make an icy igloo but we used sugar cubes instead and had a go at constructing our own sugar igloo! There were many variations and styles in the designs and shapes created by Kindergarten.
Finally, we met a new dinosaur friend called ‘Stickosarus’. We are trying to be like Stickosarus who says to ‘Keep trying when things are tough’ and ‘practice makes progress’.
