Next week is Anti-Bullying Week 2024, with Odd Socks Day on Tuesday 12 November. We’ll be joining other schools across the country in celebrating this important event. The theme this year is ‘Choose Respect,’ and we have planned activities around this topic.
To mark Odd Socks Day, anyone who wishes can come to school wearing odd socks on Tuesday 12 November—no need to buy anything special as fun, bright colours are always welcome! We suggest a £2 donation from each child, with all proceeds going to our chosen charity for the year: Learn to Love to Read. This local charity supports children who may lack access to books at home, helping to bridge the gap for those who may otherwise fall behind at school, facing disadvantages that can persist throughout their lives.
This week in assembly, our journey through “100 Wonderful Years” took a fascinating turn as we explored the incredible work being done to protect endangered species. Our theme focused on conservation and the important roles of sanctuaries, zoos, and nature reserves in safeguarding our planet’s most vulnerable animals.
We began by learning about the lifelong work of David Attenborough, whose documentaries have helped people worldwide fall in love with nature. We also introduced the children to the inspiring Dr Jane Goodall, a true pioneer in wildlife conservation. Now 90 years old, she began her groundbreaking research with chimpanzees at just 26—a story that captivated everyone, as many of our pupils weren’t yet familiar with her remarkable achievements. Through her lifelong dedication, she’s shown the world just how deeply interconnected we are with nature and its creatures.
We ended our assembly with a lively discussion about what each of us can do to help protect wildlife and nature. Everyone agreed: we all have a role to play in creating a better future for our planet.
And for a final treat, we watched a heartwarming video clip of Haggis, an incredibly rare pygmy hippo born at Edinburgh Zoo just last week! The children were thrilled to see this adorable addition to the world’s endangered species list, and it was a wonderful reminder of the importance of conservation efforts.
This week the Courtesy Cup and Badge went to Niam for always being kind and helpful to his friends and teachers. Thank you, Niam!
