One of our favourite books this week was the much-loved flap book Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. The children delighted in lifting the flaps to reveal different animals, and we had lots of fun retelling the story using small-world zoo and wild animal toys. The children shared interesting facts and debated whether to keep or return each animal to the zoo! Inspired by the book, Reception created their own pages for a class storybook, complete with wonderful illustrations. They particularly enjoyed attaching flaps to their crates to conceal their chosen animals.

We also listened to The Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saëns, performed by Joanna Lumley and The London Mozart Players. The children were captivated by the music and its vivid depiction of different animals.

In mathematics, we’ve been learning to tell the time to the hour (o’clock) and have explored the days of the week, discussing the differences between day and night. The children had fun making clocks using hula hoops, numbers, and sticks for hands, working with partners to position the numbers correctly. They also created paper plate clocks to practise telling the time at home.

Next week, we’ll continue our theme with another exciting week of learning all about wild animals!
