‘…those who had played college sport significantly outperformed their non-athletic counterparts over the course of their careers, earning 3.5% more money and attaining 17% more senior positions… Furthermore, when looking at the LinkedIn Endorsements of the individuals, perhaps unsurprisingly former student-athletes were much more likely to be endorsed for skills such as Leadership and Project Management.’

In the Hampton Prep’s sport department, we use sport and the aim of winning to deliver our values of sportsmanship, effort and team over self and the skills of communication, alertness and physicality. Therefore, it was cheering to read the report’s argument the individuals involved had an advantage because sport may reinforce the soft skills of decision making, leadership, teamwork and adaptability and builds friendships and networks. I couldn’t help but recognise the link with what we value.

The report demonstrates the power sport can bring, and how it develops skills that empowers boys to deliver their academic knowledge effectively in real world situations. So whatever level boys are participating in sport here at Hampton Prep, we are happy to see them enjoy it and developing a life long engagement in something that can be incredibly impactful and educational over the course of their lives.
