It’s been a very busy week here as two important nationwide initiatives have taken place, namely, Road Safety Week and Anti-Bullying Week. Naturally, we have taken the opportunity to raise awareness of both.
The Anti-Bullying Alliance are the official organisers of Anti-Bullying Week and the theme this year ‘United Against Bullying’ has focused on a collective responsibility, with shared efforts and shared ambitions – ‘From parents and carers, to teachers and politicians, to children and young people, we all have a part to play in coming together to make a difference. We’re all a piece in the puzzle, and together, we’re united against bullying’.
Promoting road safety is also vitally important as it is a very sad fact that road crashes are the biggest killer of young people worldwide and more than six children are seriously hurt or killed every single day on British roads. The slogan this year, ‘No Need to Speed’ caught our attention. In assemblies, we have spoken about the importance taking sensible precautions when out and about, particularly when close to busy roads. We have stressed the importance of always holding hands with an adult whenever crossing roads and always seeking safe places to do so, for example, zebra crossings, footbridges or pelican crossings. During discussions, we have also talked about why it is so important that schools have zigzag markings outside them. I know this is a subject I have written about often, but please for the sake of the children do not park on the zigzags! Their primary purpose is to keep the children safe and, of course, this is all the more important as the dark nights draw in. Added to this, engines left idling affect smaller children far more greatly than others – they are just the height to get a blast of the nasty, noxious fumes when engines are left running.

Many congratulations to Tommy (Year 2) and Rosie (Kindergarten) for becoming Spelthorne Litter Heroes! A terrific effort in making Spelthorne Borough a cleaner and greener place to live.
Also, a very big well done to Rayan (Year 1) for achieving three new badges in Kuk Sool Won – the ready stance, the spin kick badge and Nunchaku. We loved seeing him demonstrate his ready stance for us in assembly today!
