Secondly, it was Safer Internet Day 2025 on 11th February, which centred on the theme, “Too good to be true? Protecting yourself and others from scams online” and emphasised the importance of safeguarding young internet users from online scams. For parents of children aged 3 to 7, fostering a secure online environment is crucial. Here are some strategies to consider:

Utilise Parental Controls – Use the parental control features available on devices and applications. These tools can filter content, restrict access to inappropriate material, and monitor usage patterns, providing an added layer of security.

Supervised Exploration – At this developmental stage, children are naturally curious. When introducing them to digital devices, ensure their online activities are always supervised. Utilise child-friendly platforms and applications that offer educational content and always explore these digital spaces together.

Establish Clear Boundaries – Set specific guidelines for internet use, such as designated screen times and approved websites or apps. Consistent routines help children understand and respect digital boundaries.

Educate About Online Interactions – Even at a young age, it’s beneficial to discuss the basics of online interactions. Teach children to recognise and avoid unfamiliar prompts or messages and emphasise the importance of not sharing personal information.

Encourage Open Communication – Create an environment where your child feels comfortable discussing their online experiences. Encourage them to share anything unusual or unsettling they encounter during their digital activities.

Stay Informed – The digital landscape continually evolves so regularly update yourself on the latest online trends, potential risks and safety measures. Resources like the UK Safer Internet Centre offer valuable insights and updates for parents and carers.

By implementing these practices, parents can help ensure that their young children navigate the internet safely, laying the foundation for responsible digital habits in the future.
