At a young age, children can easily understand that they can be friends with and learn alongside others regardless of background, and we try hard to make the most of that here. It is our belief that by doing so, this will help them learn that variety in their society and the larger world is something to be appreciated and celebrated.
This year’s theme for BHM is ‘Saluting our Sisters’. We are being encouraged to find out more about the exceptional achievements of black women, especially those who have been forgotten. Black women have been at the heart of social justice movements throughout history, courageously battling oppression and advocating for change. BHM 2023 offers a significant opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate these achievements by focusing on and honouring the matriarchs of movements.
Our aim is to take our classroom sessions in all subject areas beyond the history text book to give the pupils here the opportunity to learn about people who have impacted our lives and the wider world around us. It will also enable us to gain a broader understanding of black histories, going beyond racism and slavery to spotlight Black achievement.
