Research shows that using positive and specific language is far more effective than general statements, so in our Life Skills lessons, we took time to explore what respect looks like in practice. The boys came up with some wonderful examples, many of which they’ve captured in their RESPECT poems. Once completed, a selection of these poems will be performed for our younger students in Pre-Prep — a highlight of the year and always a joy to witness as we share these important messages across the school!
In my assembly on Wednesday I focused on sharing what ‘difference’ and ‘prejudice’ both mean, and how prejudice can often stem from a lack of respect. Through the story of Elphaba in the musical Wicked, (a particular favourite of mine!) the boys reflected on how pre-judging someone based on their appearance, such as the colour of their skin, prevents us from truly understanding one another. We concluded with a reminder that, when we joined the school, we all agreed to uphold respect as part of our shared aims and values.
We wold be glad please if you could take a moment this weekend to talk with your son about your own experiences of difference and respect. Doing so may well spark a meaningful conversation that wraps up our week nicely. Of course, these values are important all year round, and we hope the conversations about the importance of respect will continue.
Thank you for your ongoing support in fostering these essential qualities in our school community and we look forward to announcing our competition winners in due course.
