We also explored some real-life vegetable facts—such as how carrots and potatoes grow underground while others grow above ground in farmers’ fields, before making their way to our local shops. To bring this to life, we practised our cutting skills on a cabbage! With scissors in hand, the children snipped away at the leaves, then “cooked” up their own imaginative cabbage dishes. Let’s just say, the recipes were… unique!

After reading the delightful story, Tattybogle by Sandra Horn and Ken Brown, we got creative by turning our own photos into scarecrows. With mosaic squares, coloured pens, pencils, and straw, our scarecrows came to life. We also crafted movable scarecrows using scissors, a hole punch, and split pins—so much fun!

We became artists too, creating turnip masterpieces using scissors, glue, paper, and paint sticks, carefully observing the different colours found in a turnip. These beautiful works of art now adorn the walls in Kindergarten.

This week, we also welcomed a new friend to our class: Shareodactyl – “I can share with my friends” – who is helping us learn how to share our ideas, friends and toys. We’re all working hard to be just like him!

In phonics, we made a great start by learning the sound ‘s’. We read the story of ‘s’, listened to the song, and practised the action that goes with this sound. The children had lots of fun ‘fishing’ items out of a feely bag, finding things that begin with ‘s’. To round off our phonics session, we used our scissor skills to carefully cut out a spider, which we completed with funny eyes!

Please click here  for correct sound pronunciation – it is really important the children learn pure, crisp sounds from the off.

Next week, we’re diving deeper into the season of autumn. If you and your child come across any autumn treasures this weekend—like colourful leaves or sticks—please bring them in for our display table but no acorns or nuts, please!

We hope you enjoyed hearing about our fun-filled week.
