On Wednesday we had a visit from the Evil Pea from the favourite book Supertato . During registration we found a letter asking the class to help find the dastardly pea. Our wily class soon spotted him hiding on top of the blind whereupon he was trapped in a pot and placed in detention on top of the cupboards where we could see him. Despite his entrapment, he clearly had accomplices. We knew this because a part of our Maths lesson, we have been practising counting the numbers 0-10 and some children wanted to know what was beyond that. So, we had the numbers 10-20 sitting on top of the board Amazingly, some of the numbers went missing and the class has been stupendous in identifying the missing numbers on our number line! Lo and behold, over lunch they suddenly reappeared, but other numbers in the teens had gone! The mystery continues…
Meanwhile, we practised our fine motor control using tweezers to place peas in Numicon circles – good practise in case the Evil Pea needs further handling!
On Wednesday we practised some activities for Sports Day and ran heats so that our real races will be both familiar and exciting!
Some of the other activities we have come across this week; using sand and water outside, making shapes with play dough, cutting out a Supertato character to combat the Evil Pea and recalling our 2D and 3D shapes. We have also practised counting carefully – waiting to count out loud as we point and not rushing ahead. The children have also managed the tricky problem-solving task of fitting various fractions of shapes together in a fixed space. Phew! The children have worked SUPER hard!
Our letter of the week is ‘Z’ and we tried to write it with the help of an animated story and discussed what words might start with this letter. We came up with an impressive list! Perhaps you can find some more Z words at home?
We carried out magnetic superhero experiment by colouring and cutting out a picture of our chosen superhero and we then stuck a paperclip on the back. Using a magnet, we made our hero move in circles, upwards, downwards and we made them fly across a background scene to the delight of many!
On Friday our ‘headquarters’ (our classroom) was full of colourful superheroes as the children transformed into superheroes of all types. We compared our powers and discussed these powers and how they can help people and animals – plus any super- powers we may have within us every day! Thanks to parents for assisting with the wonderful costumes.
Our exciting new topic next week is based on the story The Rainbow Fish.
I have loved my week with your children and look forward to next week!
