We also looked at pictures of common autumn sights and will be keeping an eye out for conkers, pinecones and squirrels collecting their nuts in readiness for the colder weather, as we continue to explore the season.
We read Henrietta’s First Winter by Rob Lewis, a story about a dormouse trying to prepare for winter by storing food. Henrietta faces a few mishaps along the way — ask your child what happened at the end of the story! This led to some wonderful conversations about how different animals, including dormice, queen bumblebees, bats and hedgehogs, prepare for hibernation during the autumn months.
We also enjoyed Little Acorns, a lovely story that helped us learn about the lifecycle of an oak tree. To build our fine motor skills, we threaded autumn-shaped leaves, which the children really enjoyed.
As part of our ongoing focus on the Golden Rules, we have been learning about ‘Do Be Gentle’ and ‘Do Listen to People’. We are working hard on using kind hands and words, and on ‘listening the first time’, whether we are with our friends or our teachers.
We have also been learning about 2D shapes, exploring their names and properties through fun, hands-on activities. The children especially enjoyed using paint to print with different shapes, creating bright and colourful designs.
Next week, our topic will continue to focus on autumn. Your child has brought home an Autumn Bag. If you find any seasonal items during your weekend adventures, for example, leaves, conkers, acorns, or pinecones — please place them in the bag and return it to school. These items will support our learning and exploration of the season.
