We then used the computer safely to research more about Lunar New Year and learned that red is considered a lucky colour and gold represents wealth. Our art activity was a highlight, when we created our own Chinese dragons using icing sugar water and paint. We also explored Mandarin numeral symbols and had a go at writing our own numbers using a traditional Sumi brush and black paint. Watching video clips of the dragon and lion dances inspired us to try out the movements ourselves using our lion and dragon props. In our Chinese restaurant roleplay area, the children enjoyed taking orders, cooking meals, and serving delicious dishes to their friends. We even practised using real chopsticks!
Our celebratory week ended with cooking and tasting egg noodles. Before the noodles went into the boiling water, we observed, touched, and smelled them and made predictions about how we thought they might change. Of course, we insisted on tasting them afterwards – and verydelicious they were too!
Mr Chitnis and Ms Agarwal visited to teach us all about online safety on Safer Internet Day. We listened to a lovely story about a superhero called Cyber Ved, who helped a group of school children stay safe online by reminding them never to click on unknown links. Afterwards, we had great fun dancing and learning four important words to help us remember how to stay safe: Spot, Share, Shield and Stop.
A special congratulations to Henry, who was awarded a medal in his tennis lesson last week.
After half term, we will begin our new topic: Traditional Tales. We are starting with the classic story Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
