This week in maths we have been exploring measuring. Using Unifix cubes, the children estimated how many cubes they thought they would need to build towers the same height as different sunflowers, before measuring to check how close their predictions were. They also enjoyed using the cubes to measure lots of other objects around the classroom, comparing sizes and talking about what they discovered.
Using beans, lentils, pipe cleaners and real leaves, the children created their own imaginative flower and plant sculptures. We photographed their wonderful designs and they are now proudly displayed in our classroom. As they worked, the children explored the different parts of a flower, using vocabulary such as stem, leaves and flower to describe their creations.
We had fun ‘planting’ our very own pumpkin seeds by tucking them into damp cotton wool and sealing them inside clear bags, which are now hanging proudly in our windows. The children learned from our story that seeds need sunshine and water to grow, so we’ve created the perfect spot for them to get everything they need. We’ll be checking on them each day and are very excited to watch for the first tiny sprouts appearing as our seeds begin their growing journey.
A special congratulations to Henry who was awarded a medal during his tennis lesson this week and rewarded two certificates and a meal for the Half Back Player of the week.
Our topic next week is Jack and the Beanstalk.
