We have also been learning about the four stages of the bean lifecycle. The children have been very ‘green‑fingered’ this week, planting runner bean seeds in clear plastic cups so we can watch what happens beneath the soil. We cannot wait to see the roots and shoots begin to show next week. To link our planting to the story, we coloured and cut out a castle, attached it to a plant stick, and placed it into our cups—our own tiny castle in the clouds. Fingers crossed our beanstalks grow as tall as Jack’s.
In maths, we have been exploring measurement. The children estimated how many Unifix bricks would match the height of different beanstalks, then measured to see how close their predictions were. They also used their measuring worms, carefully arranging them in order from shortest to longest.
Our art sessions have been just as busy. We created mixed‑media artworks inspired by the story using paint sticks, collage materials, and real leaves and beans. The children painted skies and tall beanstalks, then added real leaves to bring the magical plant to life. The finished pieces are full of imagination and beautifully capture the excitement of Jack’s growing beanstalk.
Outdoors, we kept active by playing the Bean Game—ask us what actions we had to do for each type of bean.
Next week, our topic will be Healthy Eating and Healthy Teeth.
