We revisited healthy eating and what contributes to a healthy lifestyle, with a particular focus on how we can keep our teeth healthy. We talked about brushing our teeth twice a day and being extra careful after eating sweet treats. We learned that if we don’t clean our teeth, the sugar left behind reacts with bacteria in our mouths, producing acids that attack the enamel and can lead to tooth decay. We also discussed how a healthy diet helps to keep our teeth strong, especially by drinking milk and eating dairy foods that contain calcium, which supports healthy teeth and bones.
We were very excited to welcome Dr Benani into our classroom on Friday to help us learn even more about how to look after our teeth. We discovered how to brush our teeth correctly, and that we need to brush for two minutes each time. We were also surprised to learn that we have twenty teeth in our mouths!
Our learning then linked to how drinking water keeps our bodies healthy and hydrated, and how milk helps our teeth and bones grow strong. Just like our beanstalks, we learned that drinking is essential for helping our bodies function properly. This led us to explore how plants drink water. To investigate, we placed sticks of celery into blue and red food colouring. We were amazed at how quickly the celery absorbed the coloured water – after just two hours, we could see the colour travelling up the stalk. This showed us how plants transport water from their roots to their leaves.
As a group, we created a pictogram to show our favourite fruits. Everyone had a turn to vote for the fruit they liked best. Strawberries were the most popular, while bananas did not receive any votes this time. We talked about which fruit had the most and the least votes, helping us practise counting and comparing numbers.
