On Tuesday, our classroom “headquarters” was buzzing with superpowers as the children transformed into superheroes and real-life community heroes such as police officers, firefighters, doctors and dentists. The children had thoughtful discussions about the different powers each hero has and how they help people or animals. We also talked about the importance of showing kindness and care, even when someone else may not have been kind first.
The children loved creating their own Supertato using real potatoes, sticky eyes and collage materials. Our small-world area was set up with fruit and vegetable characters from the story — cucumbers wrapped in bandages, carrots covered in plasters and broccoli with drawn-on expressions. With Supertato’s help, the children acted out the story, rescuing the veggie characters and trapping the Evil Pea under a shopping basket.
More pea-themed fun followed as we used tweezers to carefully pick up real peas and place them into the holes of Numicon — all without squashing a single one.
We also carried out a magnetic superhero experiment. After colouring and cutting out their chosen hero, the children attached a paperclip to the back and used magnets to make their hero move in circles, fly upwards and downwards, and even soar across laminated scenery.
On Thursday, we arrived to find a message from the Evil Pea himself. Excitement filled the room as the children worked together, using magnifying glasses and binoculars to track him down before he could cause any trouble. Thankfully, he was spotted, captured and returned to the freezer — after all, “some vegetables are frozen for a very good reason”! Using Lego, the children then designed and built a very secure “jail” for the Evil Pea — mwah ha ha ha ha!
Finally, congratulations to Kit for receiving a medal for completing a 1km Junior Tough Mudder.
Next week, our topic will be The Rainbow Fish.
