Our circle time theme, “We may all be different fish, but in this class, we swim together,” helped us celebrate what makes each of us unique. We talked about the things we find easy, the things we find tricky, and how our differences make our class special. Sitting in a circle, we turned to the friend beside us and shared something we thought they were good at and what makes them special — a beautiful moment of encouragement and confidence‑building.
In expressive arts and design, the children created stunning stained‑glass fish using cut‑out shapes and coloured cellophane. They loved experimenting with colour by layering the cellophane and discovering how many new shades they could make. We also tried some needlework, sewing Binca fish with wool and decorating them with sparkling sequins — just like Rainbow Fish’s glittering scales.
Our colour exploration continued as we revisited the three primary colours. Using pipettes, the children mixed red, blue, and yellow food colouring on white trays, watching in amazement as new colours appeared. We also carried out a colourful science investigation using Skittles. There were squeals of excitement as warm water dissolved the colours, creating a bright rainbow in the centre of each plate.
The children were bursting with excitement on Wednesday as they set to work making their colourful rainbow muffins. We worked together and carefully grated the cheese and carrots, chopped the bright red and yellow peppers, measured out the sweetcorn and weighed the flour with impressive concentration. Measuring out the milk and cracking the eggs felt like a real chef’s job. By the time the trays were ready for the oven, we were all so eager to see (and taste!) the results that we could hardly wait for home time.
Looking ahead, our next topic after half term will be Minibeasts. That same week, on Friday 5th, we’ll also be holding Sports Day. The children have been practising enthusiastically and are eager to show what they can do — we’d love for you to come along and cheer them on if you can. In the meantime, have a lovely half term week wherever you are!
