The repertoire was both varied and challenging, but the boys got stuck in and worked hard on each piece, facing the challenge head on. In the afternoon, they were treated to a performance from some of Epsom’s young musicians that included a fabulous string quartet and a beautiful solo rendition of Fritz Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro.
Duly inspired, the boys finished the afternoon with a concert of their own, performing the pieces that they had spent the day rehearsing. Pieces included Libertango by Asto Piazzola and the very tricky Cloudburst by Carl Strommen. The children also created their own piece, a wonderfully atmospheric Rainstorm, a soundscape using their instruments in unusual ways to create sound effects to evoke all of the elements of a storm. The concert culminated with an emotional performance of Two Oruguitas by Lin-Manuel Miranda, composed for the film Encanto. The young musicians had a wonderful day and we cannot wait to take part again next year.
