The last few House events have been extremely close affairs, but that wasn’t to be in this event. From the start, York House put in a dominant display to earn the right for House Captains, Alfie and Aydin to lift the Sports Day Shield!

U11 Cricket

Surbiton Prep were the opposition in the semi-final of the Verney Cup. Playing at Esher Cricket Club, the Hampton Prep boys faced a team much improved from the team they faced in our friendly match, boosted by the addition of some talented U10s.

Hampton bowled first and Cullen and Felix quickly got into their groove, taking wickets quickly. Felix had a great four overs, taking 4 wickets for single figure runs, earning man of the match. Surbiton finished their innings with 100 runs on the board. they proved to be more effective with the ball in hand, fielding with discipline and bowling accurately. Our first three wickets fell quickly but Divam and Arthur teamed up to build a 50 partnership. With 7 wickets gone and 3 needed with 1 over remaining, the pressure was on. But Jack and Cullen demonstrated cool heads to shepherd the team to a place in the final.

The Verney Cup Final!

This afternoon the boys faced Whitgift in the final of The Verney Cup at St George’s, Weybridge. It was safe to assume it would be a challenging game! Captain Divam won the toss and elected to bowl. From the first ball it was clear our boys were going to put on a special performance. In the field, they were consistently positive, encouraging and proactive, keeping the Whitgift batsmen on the back foot with outstanding fielding. Such was the pressure that at 10 overs in, Whitgift were kept to 31 runs.  Furthermore, it seemed that every other over a wicket was falling. Jack was particularly impressive, recording 3 maidens in his 4 overs and taking 3 wickets. Thomas D, Cullen and Felix took the rest of the wickets and they were bowled out for 44 in 15 overs.

In bat, Rishaan showed a steady hand and recorded 28 off 21. Three wickets fell to determined bowling, but it wasn’t enough and with 5 overs gone the boys reached the total to become Surrey U11 champions!  A massive congratulations to them and their coach, Mr Hopton. My thanks also to the parents for all their support through this highly prestigious competition.
