During our phonics sessions, we have been focusing on the correct cursive formation of the letters /s/, /a/ and /t/, and have been playing some oral blending games to blend and segment simple CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. All the class have enjoyed their reading this week with Mrs O’Brien; she was very pleased with the positive way they have approached this – we worked on pointing to each word as it is read, recognising character names in the text, looking for known letter sounds and, of course, we have encouraged plenty of talk about the story and illustrations.

All the children have reading books for the weekend, together with a reading diary. We will stick the sounds that we are learning each week into the diary. Please write a short comment in the diary each time you listen to your child read so we can see how you are getting on at home. Please keep the plastic folder complete within your child’s book bag and return to school every day. Have fun sharing the books together, talking about the illustrations and predicting outcomes to the storyline.

Some loose worksheets that we complete at school will be returned each week in your child’s book bag so that you can see what we have been learning. Please don’t forget to empty school folders weekly so folders are easy for your child to access independently!

In mathematics, we have been looking at number formation of numbers 1 and 2 and the position of the numbers on a number line, together with lots of counting. The children have also been enjoying their new ‘Number and Pattern’ workbooks, using colour to make patterns.

Next week, we will be enjoying learning about our bodies and hygiene as week two of our topic ‘Magnificent Me’.
