We enjoyed listening to the story The Little Raindrop by Joanna Gray, which follows a little raindrop’s journey through the water cycle. Inspired by the story, the children wrote some fantastic little raindrop adventures of their own – some fell into puddles, others became part of beautiful rainbows, while some washed up on a beach. We also explored the water cycle and discussed the scientific term ‘evaporation’.

On Wednesday, we had a wonderful workshop with the fabulous children’s author and storyteller, Tracey Corderoy. Using puppets and props, she brought to life the story of Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam, about two doggy friends who are the world’s most hopeless burglars. Shifty McGifty and Slippery Sam had a master plan for robbery, but it went hilariously wrong! In the end, they discovered that crime does not pay.

We loved listening to Tracey’s storytelling and were amazed to learn that the illustrator had drawn her pet golden retriever into one of the pictures. She also told us that the illustrator, Steven Lenton, had hidden a tiny spider in each illustration, so we are looking forward to hunting for them in our books. We finished the workshop with a fun step-by-step drawing session, following instructions to sketch the character Slippery Sam. We thoroughly enjoyed this, and Tracey was amazed by our fantastic drawings!

In mathematics, we have been focusing on subtraction, practising simple number sentences through a range of practical activities. We have also been representing the numbers 9 and 10 and exploring their composition.

On Friday, Reception had a fabulous day at the Clore Learning Centre at RHS Wisley. We took part in a workshop exploring how plants grow and what they need to stay healthy. We examined a variety of plants, from the smallest shoots to the largest trees.

During our visit, we went for a long walk through the oak wood, looking for buds, flowers, fruit, and seeds. We then ventured into the pine forest to see the enormous redwood trees. After a delicious picnic lunch on the benches in the sunshine, we took a tour of the glasshouse, alpine rockery and children’s garden.

A huge thank you to our parent helpers and teaching assistants for supporting us on this trip!

Next week we will be looking for Iconic Buildings and Towers – please send any photos of your child visiting any iconic buildings around the world, sending them to:  s.annandale-johnston@hamptonprep.org,uk

We are hoping to make a fabulous display showcasing where we have been!
