To begin the week, the children joined Mrs O’Brien to make a delicious Noodle Salad. They practised using knives, graters, and scissors safely, and learned to use the fork as their “friend” to help steady the ingredients – do ask them to demonstrate! While preparing the salad, the children investigated some new and unfamiliar foods, such as ginger and spring onions, which sparked wonderful curiosity and thoughtful questions. They also carefully measured the ingredients to create a tasty dressing, using their early mathematical skills in a real-life context.

We enjoyed watching the lively and noisy lion and dragon dances, which inspired the children to create their own paper lanterns, we learned that red and gold were colours believed to bring good luck and happiness.

During our phonics sessions, we learned the new digraphs ‘sh’ and ‘th’ and practised spelling a range of tricky words.

In mathematics, the children have been developing their understanding of subtraction through practical, engaging activities. We explored the language of take away, minus and how many are left, using real objects, pictures and simple stories to help the children visualise what happens when we subtract. The children practised writing number sentences on their whiteboards, such as 5 − 2 = 3, and enjoyed drawing and crossing out objects to show their thinking. These hands‑on experiences are helping them build confidence with early number skills and develop a secure foundation for future mathematical learning.

Well done for working so hard this half term, we look forward to sharing your holiday snap shots when you return!

Our next topic will be ‘Story time with Elmer the Elephant and we are looking forward to our visit to Hampton Library on Tuesday 24th February.
