Year 6 pupils enjoyed a visit to the Allianz Stadium, where they explored the behind the scenes of one of the most famous rugby stadiums in the world.
One of the highlights of the day was entering the empty stadium and taking their place in the presidential seats, giving the boys the opportunity to appreciate the incredible scale of the iconic venue. Looking out across the pitch, pupils imagined the excitement of a packed match day and experienced the stadium from a player’s perspective.
The boys also visited the President’s Suite before exploring both the home and away changing rooms. They learned how each area is carefully organised to help teams prepare mentally and physically before a match, as well as the different strategies used to create the best environment for players. It was also a chance for solemn reflection – appreciating the sacrifice of England players in WW1 and the significance of the Remembrance Gates.
Using Top Trump cards, the boys worked together to build their own rugby teams, discussing tactics, positions and the importance of teamwork. Using real match footage, pupils explored what makes a successful leader and commander on the pitch.
In the stadium museum, pupils discovered the rich history and traditions of Twickenham, learning about when the stadium was built, the people involved in its development and some of the legendary rugby players who have shaped the sport over the years.
Pupils also explored the five key physical attributes needed in rugby, including speed, power and strength. The boys tested themselves through a variety of exciting challenges, including reaction time activities, vertical jump tests and trying out the scrum machine.
