On Thursday, we were invited to take part in a Thrilling Theatrical workshop at the Prep – a real highlight this week! Along with children from other schools, Year 1 were taught some exciting new dramatical skills by Miss Bee. We learnt how to create a tableau, and then used our imagination to pretend objects were other things – “This is not a bowl, it’s actually a … hat!”. Finally, we worked in groups to act out the last part of a story. It was fantastic to see the children learning new techniques and being brave with their acting skills. What an exciting afternoon!
In English, we have been immersing ourselves in fact books. We went on a scavenger hunt to look for all the different features of fact books, and learnt how to use a contents page, glossary and index page. It was wonderful to see the children poring over the information books, using the contents pages confidently and absorbing lots of new facts! We are excited to write our own fact files next week all about African animals.
In mathematics, we concluded our topic on Place Value within 50 and began our new focus – exploring length and height. The children compared different lengths and heights, learning how to measure using non-standard units such as Unifix cubes. The children worked in pairs to estimate first and then to measure, using previous measurements to inform their estimations.
The children were excited to bring their bean seedlings home on Monday, do feel free to email e.timba@hamptonprep.org.uk with any photos as they mature. We were interested to note that the bean we planted without any water has not changed, therefore our prediction was correct! The bean we planted with water but in the dark has germinated but has not grown as much as our “greenhouse” beans with water and light.
Finally, we are very much looking forward to our Year 1 class trip to Hanwell Zoo on Thursday, 20th March and are hoping for good weather! Do please make sure your child brings their school coat with a hood, in case of any showers.
