The children were careful not to be tricked by look-alike words that sound different, such as the ea digraph in bead and head. Next week, we’ll shift to factual writing as we discover fascinating facts about the magnificent polar bear!

In maths, we built on our understanding of the part-whole model and addition facts to investigate number bonds within 10. Starting with the whole number, the children explored how many different ways it could be partitioned and worked systematically to find all possible combinations. They quickly realised that being organised and methodical is the key to success in maths. What a class of super problem-solvers we have in Year 1!

Our science lessons have sparked curiosity about animal groups. We learned the features of reptiles, amphibians, fish, mammals, birds and insects/invertebrates, and tested our knowledge with a lively quiz. Next week, we’ll dive deeper into what makes animals carnivores, herbivores or omnivores.
