In maths, we have switched our focus to subtraction, breaking numbers into their parts to support this. The children were able to link addition and subtraction facts for the first time, creating fact families. When subtracting, we considered starting with the whole number and taking away a part, checking that the answer is smaller than the starting number. Linking addition and subtraction through fact families is a big conceptual step for our Year 1 learners. It helps them see the inverse relationship between the two operations, which will lay a strong foundation for mental maths later on.

We had so much fun looking at the wonderful photos of your pets! The children loved sharing stories and learning about the different animals in our families. We also talked about what pets need to stay happy and healthy—like food, water, exercise, and lots of love. This helped us think about how we care for living things and show responsibility.

Have a super weekend!
