In maths, we have been learning to use a range of strategies for subtraction – first, we used our number bond knowledge; If I know 7-4 =3, I also know that 17-4 = 13. We also practised counting back using a number line. We talked about finding the difference – and looked at towers of cubes to help us with this. Finally, we looked at related facts to 17;

Practising a range of strategies to complete addition and subtraction calculations helps the children find a method that suits them best.

We were all so excited to follow more instructions in Science this week, when we were planting our very own beans. Our beans are in transparent bags so that we can observe the changes, and we are excited to report that some roots have already started sprouting! The children are thrilled each morning to come in and note any developments. In our lesson, we talked about what plants need to grow, and using this knowledge, predicted what will happen to the beans we haven’t watered and the ones we are leaving without any light.

Year 1 are also very excited about World Book Day next week…
