In mathematics, we have been building our knowledge of doubles to 20, and using near doubles as a tool to help with our addition skills.  We know that if we see the sum 5 + 4, we can use double 4 and then add 1 to help us calculate the answer. We have also been deepening our understanding of number bonds to 20. We worked on quick recall of these facts, and looked at the bonds we already know to 10, to help us with bonds to 20. For example, If I know that 6 + 4 = 10, what else do I know? I know that 16 + 4 = 20, and I know that 6 + 14 = 20.

Our humanities topic this half term has been Brazil, and the children are now able to locate Brazil on the map, recognise the country’s flag and recount a few facts.  This week we listened to Samba music, and looked at pictures of how the Rio Carnival is celebrated. What an absolute feast for the senses! The class were very excited to design and decorate some colourful carnival masks, in preparation for taking part in our very own Hampton Pre-Prep carnival next week!
