On Tuesday, we had the pleasure of welcoming author and teacher, Nick Stebbings, from Hampton Boys’ School. He started the day with a lively and engaging whole school assembly, sharing his journey as a writer. Later, he joined us in our classroom to introduce his newly published book, Doctor Ray and Her Magical Patients. The children loved how Mr. Stebbings brought his story to life by using drama and props. They were also intrigued by the fact that Mr Stebbings can be both head of maths at the senior school AND a book author.  What an inspiration!

The children have been exploring tally charts, tables and block diagrams in our new maths topic based on statistics.  They combined this knowledge with their English learning, with the help of our latest rainforest book “One Day on our Blue Planet – in the Rainforest” by Ella Bailey.  The children set about sorting all the wonderfully illustrated creatures featured in this book into their animal groups (using tallies and tables) and then created a block diagram to represent the data.

In science, the leaning has moved onto Plants and, this week, the children used their observation skills to describe and identify seeds.  Careful observational drawings were made of the seeds of sunflowers, runner beans, french beans and nasturtium. By the end of the lesson, they recognised that different seeds grow into different plants.

Next week, the children are looking forward to starting their rainforest diorama creations.  Don’t forget to send in your unwanted shoe boxes and any suitable recycling materials.

Have a great weekend!
