The children have been simply BRILLIANT at this challenge and a lot of fun has been had along the way.  It is the taking part that counts after all (even though we all were pretty fired up with our competitive spirit!). But the data speaks for itself:

  • 355 participating schools in the London Area
  • 2,635 classes took part
  • 26,095 students entered the tournament
  • The average score was recorded as 695 points
  • Hampton Pre-Prep and Prep’s average score was 1,015 points

So, finally coming 41st on the leader board was a real achievement for the children and they should all be extremely proud of themselves.  Along the way, their times table facts knowledge has risen exponentially!

Year 2 have relished reading yet another book highlighting the plight of the rainforest in their English lessons. “Buddy’s Rainforest Rescue” by Ellie Jackson, and superbly illustrated by Laura Callwood, is an engaging story about the global problem of deforestation.  It highlights to the children the relationship between humans and wildlife and the dangers animals face in their own natural habitats. Based on true events, the children adored learning about Buddy the orangutan and how he was rescued by a rescue centre once he had lost his home in the rainforest.  Their written task is to add dialogue to the story, learning how to formulate and punctuate direct speech accurately, and also expressing Buddy’s emotions along the way.  This will be completed next week.

In mathematics, the children have been learning about position and direction, movement and turns.  They were excited to link the rich language required to access this topic to the algorithm work that they have completed in previous computing topics. They engaged in games and activities describing movement and giving instructions to move an object or person from one place to another. They realised that it is helpful to visualise which way an object or person is facing and which way it will be facing if it turns left or right. Use of the terms ‘clockwise’ and ‘anti-clockwise’ were introduced.  The children then explored patterns that involve turns.

We have also continued working on our rainforest diorama project.  What a bunch of talented, creative children we have in Year 2!  These creations will be making their way home to you on completion next week.

In science, the children have been observing the miraculous germination of our broad bean plants in class (plus examining a few “unlucky” seeds which didn’t manage to make it!). The seeds have transformed from seedlings into fully fledged plants, and this is supporting the children’s understanding of the stages of germination and what a seed and plant needs to grow.  This will be concluded next week.

Have a super, sunny weekend.
