In English, the children enjoyed starting a new story, The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry. They learned about the community of animals that live in one such tree in the rainforest, and how they endeavour to save it from destruction. The children were in awe of Lynne Cherry’s vivid coloured-pencil and watercolour illustrations, which engaged their attention and senses throughout. We are pretty sure that her dramatic perspective inspired the Year 2 children when writing a description of a rainforest using their five senses. This was an unaided piece of writing, and what a wonderful group of writers we have in Year 2!
Continuing our science topic on Living Things and their Habitats, the children learned about the difference between things that are living and non-living. They worked together in small groups to sort and classify objects and images, before heading out into the school grounds to hunt for items that are living, had once lived, or have never lived.
We look forward to continuing all of the above topics next week. Have a super bank holiday weekend!
