Maths and science learning stepped straight out of the classroom and into Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew!
Armed with tape measures, pupils tackled a maths challenge, measuring a variety of leaves and recording their results before transforming their data into bar graphs. There was plenty of careful comparing, pattern-spotting and enthusiastic discussion as they discovered just how varied nature can be.
The young mathematicians were fascinated to learn how to tell the age of a tree by examining its rings, discovering that each ring represents a year of growth. This led to thoughtful conversations about how trees develop and the vital role they play in our environment.
The day ended with time exploring the displays, and the visit was certainly filled with plenty of “wow” moments along the way.
