Our Year 6 pupils took part in the Junior Citizenship programme, diving into a whole mix of real‑life learning experiences designed to help them stay safe and make sensible choices as they grow become independent.

The boys moved through a lively rotation of scenarios, each one led by local professionals. From the moment they arrived, they were encouraged to think on their feet, make quick decisions and figure out how they’d handle unexpected situations in everyday life.

They met police officers and firefighters who shared practical advice on everything from fire safety to first aid, as well as how to stay safe on the road and railways. One of the standout moments was the mock 999 call, along with a detective role‑play. where the boys examined clues, pieced together what happened at a mock crime scene and debated their theories with great enthusiasm. It was a brilliant way to explore right and wrong while sharpening their reasoning skills.

They also had a go at first‑aid steps, talked through what to do in a fire emergency, and discussed how to stay safe around open water. Each activity gave them the chance to ask questions, think things through and realise just how capable they already are.

The YMCA team added an extra burst of energy with team‑building challenges that had the boys communicating, problem‑solving and cheering each other on. They returned to school buzzing with a stronger sense of how to look after themselves as they navigate the world with growing confidence.
