The Bulletin - Edition 19

With two different authors visiting the Pre-Prep & the Prep this week, we celebrated World Book Day in style! The importance of firing up the imagination by reading really wonderful stories is so important, and of course has so many positive benefits for not only the development of really great ideas but also the development of a rich and effective vocabulary. The costumes everyone wore representing literary greats were a joy to behold!

Health & Nutrition

Chartwells, our catering service, supported our approach to educating the boys about living a healthy lifestyle and ran workshops and activities this week highlighting the importance of eating a balanced and varied diet. The boys in Years 3 and 4 followed simple recipes to make their own fruit and oat pots and veggie wraps. The boys in Year 5 had to work a little harder, as they used the specially adapted ‘Smoothie Bike’ and pedal-powered their way to blending up a really delicious fruit smoothie!

Year 4 Trip to Hampton Court Palace

Year 4 turned their attention to Tudor History this morning, visiting Hampton Court Palace. We toured the apartments of Henry VIII, getting a glimpse into the way that the Tudor Court lived, and how an army of workers enabled the lavish lifestyle they enjoyed. During their workshop, they assessed a selection of artefacts and information to question whether Henry was a fair king, and whether he was happy living at Hampton Court. In both cases it was clear that the answer varied depending upon the stage of his life; and a little on what kind of mood he was in!

Celebration Assembly

From the medals awarded to boys’ endeavours outside school for rugby and skiing to LOADS of ‘Man of the Match’ certificates and Headmaster’s Commendations being presented, our Celebration Assembly in the Prep on Monday yet again heralded the joyful, clever, persistent and creative endeavours of the boys!

Centenary Update

For those of us who were able to enjoy the stand out Year 3 and 4 Centenary production of ‘Bugsy Malone’ in the Hammond Theatre at Hampton last night, it was very definitely a case of stepping back in time to the era (more or less!) when the school began. The boys’ acting, singing and dancing were excellent and huge thanks to Miss Bee and Mrs Sunderland (as ever) for drawing such magnificent performances out of the boys. Next week sees our first Centenary event for parents taking place. We are all looking forward to welcoming plenty of you at the Centenary Quiz in the James Hall on Friday night. Clever thinking at the ready!

News from Mr Salt - Head of Sport

Thankfully, the rain has eased off this week and the ground dried to provide some excellent rugby playing conditions for the festivals this week. The U9 A&B teams hit the road to travel to Caldicott School. It was a great festival, eight teams attended (most of whom we wouldn’t usually play), the grounds were lovely and the hot chocolate for the boys and cake for the spectators went down well too! There was some stiff competition from the likes of Caldicott and Summerfield, but both teams kept working hard. The As won 4 lost 3, with some great runs and tries being made by Oli, Jack and Barnes in particular. The Bs won 4, drew 2, lost 1 with great attack by Jazz and solid tackling by Akhil in defence.

A Word from Mrs Murphy

It’s been a very, very busy week here at Pre-Prep but nevertheless it has been greatest of fun from the word go. Two of our year groups ventured offsite this week - Year 2 had a fabulous time at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre earlier in the week and loved immersing themselves in his wonderful works and today Reception have had a super time at RHS Wisley – thank goodness for the sunshine. All, I am so pleased to report, behaved impeccably and learned a great deal during their time offsite. It is always music to my ears to be stopped by members of the public commending the children for their super manners.

Kindergarten

We have focused on the traditional tale ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’ this week in Kindergarten. Having read many versions, we noticed that whilst many of the characters stayed the same, the trolls all looked very different from book to book, and some endings were different, too. We had fun cutting out the characters in the story and making our own story scene. We discussed how stories have settings, a clear beginning, middle and end, and identified these within the story. We had fun using the goat puppets to act out the story with friends.

Reception

Reception have been thinking about the weather this week. We have talked about all sorts of different weather types the children have experienced, and how each makes us feel. We were lucky to experience so many different weathers this week in true changing season style - from crisp spring days, torrential rain to fog! We enjoyed listening to the story ‘The Little Raindrop’ by Joanna Grey. This told of a little raindrop’s journey through the water cycle. The children then wrote some fantastic little raindrop stories of their own - some fell into puddles, others were part of beautiful rainbows, whilst some washed up on a beach.

Year 1

Year 1 had an exciting and story-filled week! In English we prepared for the visit of author Annemarie Anang, by writing questions we would like to ask her. The children remembered to start each one with a capital letter and end it with a question mark. When Annemarie arrived on Wednesday the children were so thrilled to meet her in person, and to ask her their questions. We found out what inspired her to start started writing, who illustrated her books, and where she enjoys writing her books (in her beautiful greenhouse!). We were so impressed with the children’s thoughtful and interesting questions.

Year 2

It’s safe to say that Year 2 were well prepared for their trip to the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre on Tuesday! It proved to be an enriching and exciting day out, where the children engaged in a workshop learning more about how Dahl crafted his characters. Furthermore, they explored the museum’s galleries learning about how Dahl got ideas from his own life to craft the fabulous characters in his stories. They were thoroughly immersed in a range of interactive activities, including dressing up, to develop their understanding of Dahl’s books. Year 2 then went on a village trail, exploring Great Missenden, making links to Dahl’s stories, and visiting his grave at the Church of St Peter and St Paul.
