The Bulletin - Edition 6

Our ‘Open Homework’ exhibition in the James Hall at The Prep this afternoon was as triumphant as ever! It was so exciting to see the boys explore the word ‘heat’ and respond in such fabulous and vivid ways! The day began with our celebration assembly, and as ever boys were happy and proud to be commended for their commitment to sport and lessons.

Mrs Adams writes about The National Gallery coming to Hampton Prep

We were fortunate to welcome the National Gallery into the art room for two very successful online workshops on the theme of colour and light this week. The online format works terrifically well, and of course means we can have direct access to some of the country’s leading art educators, which is fantastic for the boys here. In turn, the boys impressed with their insightful responses to probing questions and then immersed themselves in practical activities; mixing colours, exploring brush strokes and bringing their learning together in interpretations of Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’. These were wonderfully creative events!

House Lunch

There was lots of excitement in the air today with all of the boys eager to go in for lunch. In particular for the year three boys, who had their first taster of what house lunches entail.

500 Words, 2023 – a Recommendation from Mrs Van Pol

Calling all Creative Writers! The BBC 500 word story competition is OPEN! It is the UK’s most successful children's writing competition, and we are encouraging the boys and girls across the Pre-Prep and Prep to take part. It is a super way for children to use their imagination to write an exciting and engaging story. All the details of how to enter, as well as guidance about what the stories must include, are detailed in the link below. Enjoy being creative! We would love to hear your children’s stories in school and – who knows – one of them may just manage to win one of the fantastic prizes on offer. Good luck!

News from Mr Salt - Head of Sport

In this morning's assembly one of the satisfying moments was highlighting the achievements of the football teams this term. The A teams have put in some excellent performances in tournaments getting through to finals, and we have had five teams, including the U8Bs and U10 Cs, who have undefeated records. This only comes from the excellent effort the boys have been putting in. We look forward to seeing them progress after a half-term rest.

A Word from Mrs Murphy

Another busy week at the Pre-Prep this week! In particular it was lovely to see all of the wonderful homework pieces that the children have bought in based on the theme 'Heat'.

Kindergarten

After very chilly start to the week, lots of discussions took place about the animals that have gone into hibernation. We also discussed migration and learned some birds have already migrated to a warmer country for the Winter. As a group, we sorted animals into two groups based on who will migrate or hibernate.

Reception

Reception (please insert text below): Reception too focused their learning around ‘Signs of Autumn’ & ‘Nocturnal animals’. We enjoyed looking and talking about our Autumn treasure and wrote a fabulous piece of writing about ‘What I see in the Autumn’, it was particularly lovely to hear the children using some interesting Autumn adjectives to embellish their writing. In our phonics sessions, we have continued developing our blending skills, as well as learning the correct formation of letters /d/, /g/and /o/.

Year 1

Did you know … that by 2050 there is likely to be more plastic than fish in our oceans? Year 1 were truly shocked by this statistic and set about becoming influencers within the school community, to try and help end plastic pollution. We impressed Year 2 and Reception classes on Thursday when we performed our very first, class assembly. The children had obviously worked hard at home to learn their lines, and they all spoke confidently and clearly. The class were able to suggest ways the other children and teachers could help reduce plastic pollution. A brilliant job, Year 1!

Year 2

Year 2’s English work has been centred around a new text this week, ‘Lila and the Secret of Rain’. Earlier in the week, the children discovered the importance of expanded noun phrases to elevate their written work, making it more interesting for the reader and many good examples followed this lesson. In maths, we have been focusing on subtraction, learning all the different vocabulary associated with this number operation. I was pleased to see the children’s subsequent work in this area.
