French is a valued part of our curriculum, taught with energy and imagination. Wherever possible, we use the target language to create an immersive experience, helping pupils develop confidence and clarity in their communication.

Lessons are varied and purposeful, combining language analysis, games, role play, and more traditional tasks such as grammar, translation, and paragraph writing. These activities encourage pupils to think carefully, work together, and build the persistence needed to master new skills. We also explore French culture and the wider francophone world, broadening pupils’ understanding and encouraging curiosity beyond Europe.

Our approach is lively and engaging: pupils read books, sing songs, take part in the national MFL Primary Bee competition, watch French plays, and enjoy breakfast in French with their parents. These experiences help pupils connect language learning with real life, sparking creativity and deepening their enjoyment.

By the end of Year 6, we hope our pupils leave us not only with a solid foundation in French, but with the confidence and enthusiasm to embrace further language learning. Our aim is to equip them with the tools to reflect on their progress, collaborate effectively, and approach new challenges with resilience and curiosity — skills that will serve them well in Year 7 and beyond.
