French is an important part of our curriculum. We aim to teach, wherever possible, in the target language, as well as ensuring French lessons contain a wide variety of different tasks and activities.

These include some initial language analysis, games and role plays and some more traditional activities such as grammar, translation and paragraph writing, designed to ensure pupils are learning and remembering a relevant range of vocabulary and skills. We look at and study French culture and life and the francophone world beyond the boundaries of Europe. Our lessons are fun and engaging: pupils read books, sing songs, take part in the national MFL Primary Bee competition, watch French plays and have breakfast in French with their parents.

We hope that our pupils will leave us by the end of Year 6 sufficiently curious about and engaged with French to carry a love of the language with them to their senior school. We aim to instil in them the foreign language learning skills that will enable them to pick up and enjoy any additional language in Year 7 and beyond.
