Boys at Prep enjoy our bespoke Philosophy curriculum through Years 3 to Year 6. Through these lessons, the boys are given more opportunities to build their thinking, reasoning, questioning and presentation skills. The aim being to take the metacognitive thinking they do in all their lessons, to develop this further and focus on how it can help them navigate different or obscure ideas. This will foster skills that are designed help them, not only with their academic studies, but also prepare them for interviews, for secondary schools and later in life.

The Philosophy curriculum in the Prep follows a thematic approach that exposes the boys to different core areas of Philosophy and encourages discussion, reflection, valid contrarianism and an ability to argue respectfully. These themes are explored through six branches of Philosophy aiming to give the boys an understanding of different areas. These topics are:

  • Metaphysics
  • Epistemology
  • Logic
  • Ethics
  • Aesthetics
  • Metaphilosophy

Through these branches, boys explore varied and exciting lessons including: Contemporary Philosophy, World Philosophy, Women in Philosophy, Mathematical Logic, Symbolic Logic, What is art?, political and business ethics, mind and matter, and what is truth?, to name but a few. Our lessons are designed to challenge the boys and are delivered with a focus on discussion, interaction and exploration.
